Asheville Graphic Designers Meet Up

Megabites-Asheville

Come and hangout with the Asheville Graphic Designers in Pack Square Park!

Once a month the Asheville Graphic Design community will be throwing down a blanket and chatting it up. We’ll be discussing topics like favorite font pairings, places to find graphic design inspiration, work process and other great topics.

When do they happen? The second Wednesday of each summer month: June 10, July 8th, August 12.

What do I need?  Bring your own lunch, and we’ll provide a cold drink and a spot on a blanket.

North of Bali

A few months ago friend and photographer Emily Nichols approached me with the opportunity to design a logo for the organization, Young Cultural Leaders With Spiritual Insight. This organization focuses on providing spiritual guidance and training to young women in the community who can’t afford a to take part in the education system.

Collaboration

The organization’s leader was able to provide the sketch to the left that of what he was visualizing. He wanted to include two peacock features which culturally communicate success and protection.

I took his sketch and decided that this brand needed to feel more grass roots and organic in appearance. I turned to my sketch book. I digitally enhanced my drawings and provided a tactile background and soft color palette to the symbolism he wanted to include.

I paired the logo with a a crafted logotype that resembles something written by hand.

Portrait Project

Soon the W.C. Reid Center will be reopening it’s doors as Asheville’s first Green Jobs training center. There have been hundreds of man hours put into the renovation of the LEED certified building since Green Opportunities (GO)  broke ground on August of 2012. There have been over 45 GO trainees that have contributed to the renovation, and this portrait project aims to capture a few of their faces. I was thrilled to try out my new 85 mm lens and help the organization document and display the many faces that made this project possible.

Find out more about the Reid Center.

WordCamp Asheville

I had a great time at WordCamp Asheville. A great event that left me wanting to dig in more to the WordPress community here in Asheville. Highlights included  presentations by David Hickox on Designing for Content Building Better Websites Through Collaboration, Communication, and Consistency by Julien Melissas.

I’m also looking forward to Wordcamp Atlanta that will be happening next March.

Asheville Wedding Invitation Design

asheville-wedding-invitation-design I recently completed a creative wedding invitation design for Lauren and Jared, a couple from Knoxville, Tennessee. I was introduced to the couple through a friend and client, Sara Fields owner of Wedding Connections, an Asheville based wedding studio. I enjoyed the couple’s fun personalities and modern classic design taste.

For the invitation we wanted to create a map motif that touched on the idea of travel and adventure to their Asheville destination wedding. I paired bold illustrations with whimsical typefaces to create a modern one color invitation. The color palette was simple and styled to their rustic elegant motif.

The final touch was partnering up with Lizzie, owner of To and From with Love, to press my design into a beautiful Ecru White Crane Paper.

Hand Painted Typography

typography-mexico

On my recent trip to the Mexico I spent some time taking photos of the hand painted typography on the side of buildings. This well-crafted signage was a vibrant backdrop for my travels and makes for some great eye candy.

Sawtooth

Logo-signature

Recently FullSteam Labs Saro Lynch Thomason and I teamed up to design a logo for the new Asheville based business Sawtooth. Sawtooth is the latest endeavor from Katie Bray, the mastermind behind Solarize Asheville.  This Asheville-based consulting firm is focused on project management and market innovation in the clean energy sector.

This logo was designed to be clean, modern and bold. Sawtooth will be the umbrella company for many future campaigns. The logo needs to be highly scalable and prominent when reduced down to black and white. The geometric lines are reminiscent of both the Sawtooth Mountain Range where Katie grew up and also the sawtooth solar panel roof line.

Infographics for Social Justice

asheville infographicsView the entire infographic.

This infographic was created to visually communicate the outcomes and social strategies of Asheville organization Green Opportunities. We worked to combine provocative headlines and simplified graphics to represent the organizations real collected data on their outcomes.

Making Infographics

Last year I joined Jason Johnson (FullSteam Labs) and Billy Schweig (Green Opportunities) in our first team effort to build an infographic from the ground up. Every Wednesday night for a few months, we would collaborate and share sketches over pizza and home brews. A lot of data was collected and distilled down into digestible visual elements to form a narrative for the organization. We couldn’t be prouder of the outcome from all of our number cramming and morsel making.infographics-sketch
